Episode 34: Four Misconceptions about Teacher Businesses

Do you feel stuck when it comes to deciding on the direction of your business? Maybe you have an idea of what you want your business to look like, but you haven’t really seen it done before and you’re not really sure if you can pull it off?

When I was introduced to the expansive teacher entrepreneur community online, I noticed that I had misconceptions about teacher businesses that were keeping me stuck. These are misconceptions that I see other teacher business owners struggling with and I think they keep many teacher business owners from moving forward in their business.

In this episode, I want to share four common misconceptions and help us re-conceptualize these factors when it comes to teacher entrepreneurship. My hope is that at the end of this episode you feel equipped to not only start your teacher business but also empowered to take it to the next level.

Episode Highlights:

  • Misconception 1: A teacher business means selling products for other teachers to use on websites like Teachers Pay Teachers.

  • Misconception 2: If you’re starting a business as a teacher, your business needs to be education-centric.

  • Misconception 3:  You’re not prepared.

  • Misconception 4: You don’t have time.

Action Steps:

  • Do some research 🔍 about other teacher business models and see what they look like

  • Look 👀 for other businesses that teachers have started that aren’t education-centric.

  • Have conversations 📲 with business owners about how they feel like teaching prepared them for running their business.

  • Ask teacher business owners about their business work schedule ⏰.

I’m wondering, what’s a misconception that you’ve believed or that you’ve seen other teacher business owners struggling with -
